Millikan High School
2800 Snowden Ave., Long Beach, CA 90815 USA
Millikan High School was founded in 1956, at 2800 Snowden Ave, Long Beach, CA 90815.
According to Jerry Muszynski, bass drum 1966-1969, There were two ranks of syncopated drummers in the marching band as early as 1966.
One would not be able to discern this looking at the Millikan yearbook and archives. The 1967 yearbook band pictures show 6 drummers and most likely a complete marching band of under 70 students.
By 1971 the drum section was most definitely syncopated boasting 16 drummers powering Millikan Rams band of over 132 students! We are curious to see the changes in numbers for drumming between 1968-1970. Roger Johnson (Millikan director 1968-1980) told us the marching band was reduced in size and the syncopated drumming section was changed to rudimental in 1975/1976, though syncopated drumming was still available for the students to perform at rallies or school functions outside of band performances.
Today the drummers of Millikan perform standard drum corps rudimental cadences.
